The Hunt for a Knife at Sam’s Club: Finding the $40 Leatherman Bolster
Every month I make a Sam’s Club grocery run. It’s a routine trip to restock the essentials for home. This time, I decided to make things more interesting and see if I could find a good knife or multitool right there while shopping.
I didn’t have to search long. One of the seasonal holiday gear aisles caught my eye, filled with gloves, flashlights, and boxed tools that looked perfect for gifting. That’s where I saw it—a full display of Leatherman Bolsters, lined up and priced at forty dollars. A real Leatherman multitool sitting among the holiday gear. That was all the convincing I needed.

First Impressions
Out of the packaging, the Bolster feels like a true Leatherman. Solid stainless steel handles, smooth pivots, and spring-action pliers that snap open just right. It’s basically a simplified version of the Wingman or Rev—practical, tough, and built for everyday use.
What’s inside:
• Spring-action needlenose and regular pliers
• Wire cutters and a wire stripper
• 420HC plain-edge knife (outside accessible)
• Small internal serrated blade
• Phillips screwdriver
• Medium and small flat drivers
• Wood and metal file with a short ruler
• Bottle and can opener
• Pocket clip and nylon sheath
What it does not include is scissors, and that’s my biggest complaint. For a multitool this size, they would make a big difference.

Putting It to Work at Home
Once I unloaded the groceries, I had a pile of boxes waiting to be broken down. It was the perfect test for the Bolster. The plain-edge blade made clean work of every piece of tape and cardboard. Its shape and grind make it easy to control, and it stayed sharp through all of it. No edge roll, no flex, just smooth cuts and a solid feel.
By the time the last box was flattened, I realized how capable it was for something that cost forty dollars.

Final Thoughts
What started as a normal grocery trip turned into an unexpectedly fun scavenger hunt. The Leatherman Bolster might not have all the bells and whistles of higher-end multitools, but it delivers real Leatherman quality at a price that’s hard to beat.
If you’re at Sam’s Club this season, take a look down that holiday gear aisle. You might end up walking out with groceries and a multitool you’ll actually use.
